February 2-8, 2020: John 10:1-17

My grandfather’s ancestors hailed from Scotland. Long before 23andMe, my uncle traced our family roots to the wild and beautiful Isle of Skye. He even traveled to the island seeking relatives. To his great joy the search ended in an island village where he met a few village members with whom he shared Scottish ancestors.

He was a beloved uncle and in my final conversation with him before he succumbed to terminal cancer, I promised that I would visit the Isle of Skye.

A few years ago I was able to keep my promise, and I will never forget the breathtaking beauty, but also the many free roaming sheep. They have the right of way on all roads. It quickly became clear that a shepherd would be most helpful. Sheep need a guide, someone who keeps them from wandering aimlessly and into danger.

John 10:1-17 reminds us that we too need a guide. Following our instincts and developing our own pathway will never bring the joy that allowing the Good Shepherd to lead us will. But this Shepherd does not just lead, He gives us His all. “I am the Good Shepherd and am ready to give my life for the sheep.” John 10:11, The Clear Word.

Reflect: Think of what it cost for Jesus to be your Good Shepherd.
